The level of photography education in Philadelphia is almost unparalleled. The University of Pennsylvania, for instance, offers a photography major that covers not only the essentials of technique and processes, but also the history of photography. Drexel University's photography program is a hands-on experience that helps students gain their own style while training them for a career in fine arts or commercial pursuits. Two schools devoted entirely to arts, the University of the Arts and Moore College of the Arts, train students for careers in photojournalism, architectural photography, commercial work, and fine arts.
There are opportunities for all of those career paths for photographers in Philadelphia. In and around the major metropolitan Philadelphia area, job growth through 2012 is expected to grow at least 14.3% for independent artists, and as much as 20% for museum and other fine-art type positions.
